SUBMISSIONS
Information for columnists and article submissions
We welcome submissions from everyone. Do you have an exciting story to tell, some uplifting thoughts? Some creative writing pieces? Check out the submission guidelines below, we will be thrilled to hear from you!
It is important to adhere to the following guidelines in order for your article to be processed in a timely, stress-free manner.
Articles

- Mental health awareness
- Men’s health/ sexuality
- Notions of gender
- LGBTQ topics
- Addictions
- Race relations
- History
- Therapies
Articles are encouraged to be between 1500 words – 1800 words
Article writing tips:
- Though we call them articles your pieces can be structured however you see fit. Open Door is a sort of diary so we appreciate your creativity.
- An easy starting point to write would be to start with a mind map, and write 6-8 main points you would like to tackle in your piece. This can be your skeleton- flesh it out as you desire.
- Piece can be written as diary entries, articles, reflections… however you feel it would be put across best.
When submitting your article:
- Make sure your article is clearly titled at the top of your page. With your full name.
- Include your high resolution headshot and any other illustrations within your article doc- NOT AS AN EMAIL ATTACHMENT.
- Include a short 50 word bio or alternatively your title/occupation in your article Doc.
- Indicate the word count at the top of the page
- Do not send your article as a google file link – send as a word doc attached to your email.
- Indicate a quote or two from your article that will be used to promote your article in the magazine. Copy and paste quotes underneath your article title and label ‘Quote’.
- Write your name at the end of your article with your preferred contact detail (Social media or email).
- We love promoting your projects, services and businesses…feel free to attach an advertisement page/ poster for your services or products that we can use as interludes within the magazine. Adverts will be subject to approval by the editorial team.
Columnist Photography Guidelines
- Check for watermarks on your photos.
- When looking for photos online try to use – labelled for reuse and use high resolution photography. Anything too low will be rejected.
- Indicate photography sources for your articles.
When complete, send your article in one email

The Publishing Process
This section is for your information in order to appreciate the lengthy and complex process that goes into producing our magazine.
2. Upon being selected to write for the journal. You will have a deadline of up to 4 weeks to create your article
3. Send complete article to:
Sunbirdjournalpublishing@gmail.com
Tonie will make the necessary edits (only one round of editing will be provided for articles)
- Danny will read it in order to write the overview
- Eddie will assign post release interviews
4. At this point the front cover and other advertising vignettes are created
5. Once edits are complete, Tonie will send the articles to Tech (Kusmin) to be formatted and added into the magazine template
6. Once all articles are received
- They are added to magazine
- Paper copy is created
- Digital copy is created
7. Magazine is uploaded to Amazon
8. The team orders the first paper copy to review. Any updates/ errors need to be flagged at this point.
9. Magazine is updated/ re-uploaded if necessary and ready for release date.
EXTREMELY IMPORTANT
Please note: Every edit after the article has been processed will be charged at £15 – half of the price of what it costs the publishing house for edits. It is paramount that all instructions in this document are followed to the letter.
If the article is submitted after the deadline stated by the editorial team, it will be rejected.
